In this tutorial i will explain how you can update your ipod touch 4 to the latest version using automatic updates on your iTunes 10.1 [required].

Steps to upgrade iPod Touch 4 to iOS 4.2 :

Download and install iTunes 10.1 on your computer [ Mac | Windows ]
Launch itunes on your computer and connect the ipod touch 4 with the USB Cable
iTunes will detect your device and start syncing .
Automatic update will alert you to update your device to iOS 4.2 as shown in the screen below .
Proceed with the “Download and Update” button or just download if you decide to update later. Note that the download file is over 600 MB , so that will take time to download if you are on a low-speed internet connection.
If the automatic download screen do not appear or you have disabled automatic updates for your ipod touch 4 , you can enable it by going to itunes window , Select your device as shown in the image below and click on Update . This will take you through the same process as the above , and upgrade your device to ios 4.2.
